House Bound Energy

Updated: Aug 11, 2023

Sometimes the house just gets into a funk. The people that live there start to snark at each other, and the house itself just feels combative or plain sad. Our homes are a sacred place in and of themselves. This is true no matter if you live in an apartment, trailer, stick frame house, tiny home or sleeper semi.

When the energy gets funky - it affects our mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Long term issues in those areas can even begin to manifest in our bodies - and that's not pretty for anyone. You and your spouse might start to argue, your kids may get into an angsty funk, your roommates may start getting on your nerves and you just feel like you wanna cry or pick a fight. So let's fix it.

How to cleanse when things are wonky

It's not easy to get into a calm and meditative headspace when things are all over the place. Many cleansing rituals begin with this step and often for me it is just unrealistic. How can you find calm when you are surrounded by chaos? Easy - embrace the chaos (at least a little).

For those who can light candles:

Step 1:

  • Find your favorite candle, the one that smells like happy

    • A tealight candle works as well - even if it's scentless

  • Light it and tell it what you want (Please be safe with Fire.....)

I like to say:

Bring the energy of this home out of this funk and welcome in joy

For those who can't light candles

Not everyone has a safe place to have an open flame. But that does not mean you are unable to cleans your space with a positive scent. Alternative options exits such as:

  • Incense / Resins / Fresh herbs

  • Candle warmers

  • Wax burners (Yes this includes Scentsy and the wax melts you get at the grocery store)

  • Essential Oil diffusers

  • Spray bottle with distilled water and essential oils (Good oils can be cost prohibitive)

    • Febreze and other scented sprays you buy at the store count!

    • Perfume or Cologne also count

    • Pre made blends from a metaphysical shop are abundant as well

  • Spray bottle with herb infused water in it

  • Florida water either in a spray bottle or on a cotton swab/hand towel

    • Fun fact - Florida means flowers.....

  • Fresh baked goods or fresh cooked food can make your space smell great as well

Ultimately the goal is to trigger your olfactory senses and those of your housemates to help lift your moods and the energy in the house. Intention is what matters here more than application. The links above are from Amazon as that is the most accessible resource for folks currently (I will refrain from diving into my personal opinions of corporation nonsense). These are just examples of products that I found, liked, have used etc. Don't buy outside your budget - and if possible use what you already have at home or support your local witchy shop.

OPTIONAL but recommended:

  • Open doors and windows that have screens (No bugs in, no indoor pets out). This lets the air circulate and during the day lets in sunlight which can elevate your mood.

  • I also like to add movement once I set my scent for joy. This can look like dancing, walking, spinning in a circle, engaging in chores or other daily tasks, sitting on the couch and kicking my feet like a three year old.

    • Sometimes when I'm feeing extra funky I'll go into my room and throw a full blown tantrum 4 year-old style on my bed. Not only is it fun, and a bit silly, but the movement and expression of emotion helps me "get it out".

IMPORTANT:

It is important to me to express in extreme clarity that there is no way to fix someone else's emotional state. Their mood, and emotional state is not your fault nor is it your responsibility. You are only responsible for your reaction and sometimes icky emotions just happen with no cause. This is OK - this is Human - this is a shared reality. This is especially true for those who are neurodivergent. So please be kind to yourselves.

I always like to remind myself that I am not responsible for what is done TO me, but I am always responsible for how I react to things. My reactions are what I have to be accountable to, and the same is true for others. While actions we take as Witches and Humans in general can impact, affect, and influence another's experience, that does not make us the catalyst to their joy or lack there-of.

That being said, if you are in a situation where you feel hopeless, unsafe, or are otherwise overwhelmed I beg you to do the bravest and most courageous thing on the planet - ask for help.

Final note:

You may be surprised by how quickly the mood in a space is lifted by the efforts of just one person to change it. A deep breathe, a kind word, and a candle lit can turn the day from bad to good.

We all take turns in my house being the joy, and often we find that all four of those in my house are holding that torch. It only takes one to notice a mood shift, and one is usually enough.

Sometimes, on really rough days, going to your respective corners and engaging in some self care is needed. Other times long hugs and deep conversations are what is called for.
